02/08/2008 Southern Mens League - Round 6 - Ipswich details
Huntingdonshire AC men’s team came to Ipswich, they saw, they conquered. By winning the final Southern Men’s League match of the season, the team finished up as unbeaten champions. Such was the quality of the team that they came away with 25 wins out of a possible 36 and an unheard of final team score of 199 points. Top points scorer was Charles Pook who achieved five victories in the sprints and jumps. However, Athlete of the Match was awarded jointly to 39-year-old Peter Downhill and 15-year-old Jonathan Edwards. While Peter took part in six events, winning five of them, young Jonathan scored big in the throwing events. Although throwing less that his dad, John, in the hammer throw, he nevertheless picked up the B string win with a new Club Under-17 Men’s record distance. He later took part in the discus competition as a guest and managed to gain revenge over dad by out-throwing him with yet another Club Under-17 Men’s record. Also in the throwing circles, Paul Hayball and Tim Izatt swept the board with two victories each in the A and B string shot putt and discus. Like Jonathan, both were in record-breaking form, with Paul setting new club figures in the Under 20 Men’s discus and Tim breaking his own Club Master’s record in the same event. On the track, 16-year-old Michael Smith showed the way with convincing wins in the A string 1500m and the B string 400m while later contributing to the victorious 4x400m relay team. His superb efforts came off the back of a huge mid-week personal best in the 3000m when he reduced his time by 14 seconds down to 9:05.83. Christian Roberts was in fine form, not only breaking two minutes for an easy win in the 800m, after haring through the first 200m in sub-26 seconds and the 400 in 54.7 secs, but also taking the 200m sprint victory as well. 15-year-old Jack Bainbridge also made a major contribution to the winning day by participating in four events, winning the B string long jump and anchoring the 4x400m relay team to a convincing 150-metre win. Next season, Division 3! Many thanks to Trevor Smith who drove the mini-bus (all season) and also to Mike Hayball and Geoff Brewster who assisted with field events officiating.
